Ester Settle attended the American Cancer Society’s volunteer award luncheon at Johnny Appleseed Restaurant in New Market. One of the guest speakers was Dr. Deborah Lannigan, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Microbiology and a UVA researcher. She shared a fascinating report on her study of the effect of a rare rain forest plant on cancer. Her passion for cancer research comes from a family history of cancer. Both her father and grandfather died of cancer. Dr. Lannigan is particularly interested in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Ann Vaughn, of Richmond, was also at the luncheon. She is a Grassroots Advocacy Manager and is responsible for educating volunteers about cancer advocacy. Ann is the daughter of Bo Bradford, and the granddaughter of the late Boo and Frances Bradford who used to own and operate Bradford’s Store in town.
The Flint Hill Ladies Lunch Bunch took over a few tables at The Mill in Front Royal last Friday during their monthly lunch outing. Nine women from the United Methodist Church shared a lot of laughter and good conversation over great food! It was wonderful to have our two beautiful nonagenarians with us - Edna Lollard and Mabel Lollard. These cousins played together as little tykes and then grew up and married brothers. Not many of us can say that we have known someone for ninety years, but these ladies sure can!
Kids, put on your best costume and come out to the Flint Hill Volunteer Fire Department for a Halloween Party, Tuesday Oct. 30 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. There will be a costume contest, games and refreshments for all children, newborn through age 16.
