QWhat are your thoughts
about joining in a regional jail agreement with Warren and Shenandoah counties?
A I have been involved in
jail administration for nine years. I have prepared the jail cost analysis and participated in jail audits. During my tenure, I have found it increasingly difficult to meet Department of Corrections standards and our jail costs continue to rise. The Rappahannock County Jail is one of the oldest jails in > Virginia. Our rated capacity is seven inmates; we are currently housing between 20 and 22 inmates. Our jail is a minimum-security facility, which requires us to find other facilities to house highrisk inmates or inmates with significant medical needs. I have been involved with the regional jail concept since its inception some 18 months ago. Rappahannock is not a potential location for the regional jail due to the lack of water and septic treatment facilities. Legislation has granted 50 percent funding by the state to help pay for the regional jail. We do not have property to build a new jail or to expand our jail. The maximum funding available for local jails is 25 percent. I do not oppose our participation with Shenandoah and Warren. I
