He noted that he’d made no reductions in the proposed county budget. “For any real deductions, there are only so many places to get it,” he said. The budget includes $35,000 for remodeling the court house. “That’s 20 cents on the rate,” Cox said, explaining that 10 cents on the levy brought approximately $1,600 in revenue.
“It will take another 10 cents to set up the sheriffs’ cars,” he continued, referring to the appropriation—half reimbursable by the state—to provide three county cars for sheriffs deputies. “Other than that, there's the school budget,” Cox concluded.
Luke suggested the supervisors hold a joint meeting to inform the school board of the county’s financial condition. "We need to tell them that we’d like to see some cuts in this budget," he explained.
“Let’s wait until we get further on the way,” suggested H. B. Wood. “Let’s see what we can do first."
