Besides liability, the single largest component of the proposal is for worker's compensation at a premium of $5,211.
‘‘How many people are covered for workmen’s compensation?" asked supervisor H. B. Wood.
"All county employees,” Bowen said, explaining that the number of workers was taken from the county’s social security report, covering a payroll of approximately $218,000. He noted that constitutional officers, welfare department employees, library and extension office personnel are all included. “If someone is injured on the job, whether they're parttime or full-time, you’re subject to the worker’s compensation laws of the state of Virginia whether the county is insured or not,” Bowen said.
Currently, as the county is without insurance coverage for worker’s compensation, all claims approved by the Virginia Industrial Commission must be paid in full from local funds. Maximum allowable in weekly payments is $175, limited to 500 weeks. There is no ceiling on medical costs.
