Applications for state financial aid to assist communities in preserving or revitalizing public or private mass transportation services are now being received by the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation.
The 1980 Virginia General Assembly appropriated $500,000 for the 1980-81 fiscal year as an incentive to improve mass transportation. The program is administered by the department’s public transportation division.
The aim of the state program is to provide financial aid to help maintain or renew transportation services by starting projects designed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the various systems, according to Michael D. Kidd, the department’s public transportation coordinator.
Applicants eligible for the state aid include local governing bodies, transportation district commissions, or the Department of Highways and Transportation. Kidd said private transportation companies may take part in the program through signing contractual agreements with eligible
