To the editor:
As a native born citizen of Rappahannock County, I join with the Rappahannock News in urging all citizens to register before May 29 so they may vote in the upcoming referendum on the School Board June 17.
A NO vote on June 17 will prevent political control over the education of our school children and keep the children from being made political footballs. The long established policy of Virginia is to keep politics away from education.
A NO vote will also hold down our county taxes. If the referendum were to succeed, the supervisors would be under tremendous political pressure to appoint school board members with the “Hire, Hire; Spend, Spend” mentality. This pressure would come from those now waitingumd hoping to get on the county payroll and from their friends who are already on the public payroll and buy their groceries with our taxes.
No voter should forget that nearly three-fourths of every dollar taken from him in taxes is used to support the school system, so that it is in the school system where we must insist on one dollar’s worth of educational service for every tax dollar spent
