Last week, Mrs. Lucas was still painting away on a sunny side-porch while her long lifelong friend an^ companion, Lelia Ann Russell, worked in the -den, matting and framing pictures for display. There was no easel on the porch. Mrs. Lucas works on her lap \ with brushes, paints aiur containers of water crowded onto newspaper strewn over a table within easy hand’s reach.
“I make a terrible mess,” the artist admitted. “I spill things, dip my paint brush in my ice tea—just a mess.” As proof, there were paint spots on the floor and on Mrs. Lucas’ trousers but not a single out-of-place drop of color marred the unfinished painting of the Blue Ridge skyline.
