The school board members voted unanimously to reinstate one student after three days of suspension. His violation-possession of a bottle of alcohol at a school function. He was also barred from participation in extracurricular activities, ordered to ride the bus to and from school and directed to attend alcohol counseling at the mental health clinic.
A second student was reinstated by unanimous vote after 11 days of suspension. His violation was drug related. He too was barred from extracurricular activities and directed to attend drug counseling sessions at the mental health clinic.
The big difference in the three cases is the length of time of the suspension period. One was forced to miss 14 days, one 11 days and one only three days. Is this equal treatment?
The school board spent untold hours going over and over their drug policy. With all that effort, it’s a shame they couldn't do any better.
