Punishment meted out under the Rappahannock school board’s drug and alcohol policy continues to be a travesty of justice.
Earlier in the year, a student was suspended for 14 school days. His offense-possession of four and a half ounces of homemade strawberry wine. He was barred from all extra-curricular activities for the remainder of the term. As a further condition of his reinstatement, he was directed to attend counseling sessions on alcohol abuse at the mental health center.
During his suspension, the student’s parents fought to have an early hearing on the case by the school board. The board refused, going by a strict interpretation of the drug and alocohol policy which specifically states that discipline cases will be heard at the regular monthly meetings of the board. A special session was denied, even after the parents sought relief through the courts.
