wildflowers. She works from pictures she carries in her head and although her eyesight has faded, her memory remains fresh. She still sees crystal clear with the mind’s eye.
While her art work gives an impression of delicacy, most of the paintings are done in bold strokes. A few, however, are miniatures, crafted with tiny sweeps of the brush. Many of the water . colors were finished in a single afternoon, she > reported. Some took a couple ' of sittings but none are the work of days and days over a palette.
Mrs. Lucas no longer needlepoints but she hasn’t given up stitchery completely. “I knit—I’ve always been a knitter. I considered it something I could leave for my old age,” she said.
She now has partial vision in only one eye and that too is going. Mrs. Lucas has plans, though, for the day she can’t see at all to paint. “When my eyes finally give ' out, I’ll try writing,” she predicted.
Judging from her success at other art forms, her first book could win a national award or at least top the New York Times list of best
