The new Agricultural Adjustment Act signed recently by President Carter extended the disaster payments program through the 1980 crop year.
The ASCS disaster payments program provides crop protection against severe weather conditions and includes provisions for prevented planting and low crop yields. Applications for disaster credit must generally be filed within 15 days after harvest, while evidence of the crop is present.
The program authorizes payments to wheat and feed grain producers whose crop yield is less than 60 percent of the established yield times the acreage planted for harvest. Farmers will also be eligible to receive disaster payments when they are prevented from producing any program crop for harvest because of a natural disaster.
The disaster payments program covers drought, flood, hail, windstorm, insect infestation. Tom Taylor, County Executive Director for Rappahannock, advises farmers to keep an accurate record of their 1980 crop production and notify the county ASCS office before destroying acreages or planting other than grain crops when a disaster strikes.
Taylor also pointed out that farmers who plan to commingle farm-stored commodities which were produced in different crop years should have previous year’s production measured by ASCS before placing the 1980 crops in the same bin.
