Lelia Noyes Lucas steadfastly denies that she has any exceptional talent. Instead, she attributes her success to an excess of energy. “I hope I’m not a workaholic but I’ve always been active. I couldn’t sit around and do nothing,” she said, explaining that she first took up needlepoint and then painting just to keep busy.

She’s not dismayed about her fading vision. Instead, she sounds even excited and happy about the prospects of having time to write. She keeps looking at the bright side.

“Nothing ever bad happens that doesn’t have some good come out of it,” Mrs. Lucas said in a statement of her guiding personal philosophy. “Oh, there might be some terrible disaster when that wouldn’t be true but I can’t think of one now. The bad only becomes overwhelming when you don’t try to turn it into something good.”"' ,”;'7
