year the event is held on the Sunday preceding the anniversary of the battle in which Virginia MilitaryInstitute cadets distinguished - themselves.
Some 10,000 troops, clashed here May 15, 1864, when former Vice-President John C. Breckinridge, the Confederate commander, turned back an advancing Union army under Union Major General Franz Sigel.
Breckinridge had ordered the 247 untested VMI cadets from their classrooms to join his forces. After a four-day march, they arrived at New Market and were in the thick of the fight, performing with.i precision and courage.
