Newbill Miller was returned to the office of mayor of Washington on a write-in ballot in Tuesday’s municipal election and the five incumbent council members also retained their seats. Bradford Fisher was reelected treasurer of the town with 79 votes.
The write-in voting resulted when Miller failed to file and get his name on the ballot after he was given an incorrect form to fill out by an election official.
“1 don’t want the townspeople to think that I take the office of mayor lightly,” Miller said. “I consider it serious business and have treated it in that respect for ,„the term 1 have already served.”
“I appeared to file along with most of the council members. However, I received the incorrect form and when the error was realized I was out of the state,” said the incumbent. “After returning home, I was notified by phone of the error the day prior to the filing deadline. It slipped my mind until a call from Richmond informed me that I could still make the ballot if I took the papers to Richmond by five o’clock that day. The farm was making too many demands on me to make the journey feasible," continued Miller.
