It was a beautiful sunny day last Thursday for the Fannons’ polo game where Rappahannock played the British Army team for a challenging match. Bill Fannon and Chet Fannon were so dashing in their riding attire and excite-ment filled the air throughout the game. Edgar Staples of Ruther Glen in Caroline County was enthusiastically cheering the team as his son Phillip galloped along on his grand horse. Daniel Fernandez, one of our best players, was injured in the face but recovered to play the full game.
Heather Fannon, Bill’s attractive daughter, was walking the horse between chukkers (seven-minute periods of play). She is a sophomore nugoring in nursing at George Mason University in Fairfax. She said that women play polo too but it’s usually in a women’s tournament with a smaller polo field. Polo is such a fast and rough game, like that of hockey, that it must take a real adventurous person to participate. In fact, a photographer at the end of the field near the goal posts was practically run over by the horses as he tried to get some close-up action shots of the game. Yes, that was Jon Heddleston, the editor of our newspaper - risking his life for his readers! Now was that funny?
