Circulating through the crowd was a host of recognizable independents and Republicans. Prominent among them were Richmond attorneys Lewis Booker and Waller Horsley; E. Morgan Massie, president of the A. T. Massey Coal Co.; Charles M. Guthridge, vice president of the Transco Coal Co.; William Franck, board chairman of Martinsville’s Tultex Corp.; Burness Frith, a Martinsville Contractor and Harry Gravely, chairman of the board of the Gravely Furniture Co.
Also on hand was Francis T. West of Martinsville. West is a member of both the “Virginians for Warner” organisation and the “Friends of Wyatt Durrette,” a group which is laying the groundwork for Durrette’s bid for the Republican gubernatorial nomination next year. If Durrette should win the nomination, he would be heading the ticket against which Terry would be running.
