Although no egg masses have been discovered in Rappahannock, Finn said they had been found at Matthews Farm Campground in Shenandoah National Park.
The state has determined sprays to be the best method of eliminating gypsy moths, Finn explained. Virginia this year used dimilin and “BT” on some 4,000 acres of forest in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The state program was closely monitored, Finn said. Pilots applying sprays used maps and were followed by chase planes to insure proper application.
Dimilin is a “growth regulator” that keeps the gypsy moth caterpillar from forming an outside skeleton, which it molts to grow, Finn explained. Dimilin has a 90 percent kill rate, but cannot be used around water because it affects certain forms of aquatic life.
BT, which can be used near ponds, is a biological material that has a 60 percent kill rate, Finn said. BT provides a good foliage protectant, he said, but takes more treatments to be
