Finn said the state will recommend a program for a county to follow in order to avoid a mishmash and overlapping of applications. The state will not initiate the program, however. Rather, the program must be requested by the county, which can enter into a cost-share contract with the state.
Finn said gypsy moth infestations become a “people problem” due to the unpleasant experience and the risk of loss of valued timber. He said he had been in contact with Birgitt Thornhill, Rappahannock Extension Agent for agriculture, who wants residents interested in serving on a county board to control the spread of the gypsy moth to contact her.
