Three Wakefield School seniors, Halbert Brooks III, Josephine Rood, and Lauren Wemmer have been named semifinalists in the 1986 National Merit Scholarship competition.
The 1985 competition began last fall when over one million juniors attending some 18,000 secondary schools throughout the nation took the qualifying test, the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The top scorers in each state, representing about half of one percent of the state’s high school graduating class, are named seniifinalists.
Nationwide, there are 15,000 high school seniors who have been named semifinalists in the 30th annual Merit Program. These semifinalists must now advance to finalist standing in order to continue in the competition /or ,about 5,500 merit,, scholarships valued at over $20 mil- " lion, to be awarded in the spring of 1985. The designation “National Merit Scholar” is one of the most important distinctions that a high school senior can earn.
