According to Finn, the gypsy moth is not native to the United States, but was introduced in the late 1800’s by a “well-meaning” scientist who wanted to cross the gypsy moth with silk worms. The experiment failed, and the gypsy moth was released into the environment.
Gypsy moths, which do their damage while in the caterpillar stage, proliferate by the millions. During an infestation, the moths will devour virtually every type of green vegetation, but feed first on oaks, preferably white oaks, he said.
