But the list of guests in attendance left little doubt about the lay of the political landscape. The gathering was described by one observer as the largest and most impressive gathering of the lions of the state’s fabled Conservative Coalition since they rallied to Chuck Robb’s banner in his race for the governorship in 1961. From all parts of the Commonwealth the executive jets flew in to Martinsville’s municipal airport. A helicopter delivered House of Delegates Speaker A. L. Philpott, who had been at an earlier engagement in Virginia Beach.

One of the chief organizers of the event was Robb’s ace fundraiser, Del. Alson Smith of Frederick County. Also on hand were such top Robb lieutenants as Alexandria attorney Williain Thomas, Richmond stock broker McLain T. O’Ferrall, auto dealer James O’Quinn of Haysi and Richmond businessman John Massad.
