Art show at Middle Street
The Rappahannock Elementary School Art Show and a show of sculpture by New York City artist Rebecca Howland will open at Middle Street Gallery Artists Cooperative on Saturday, May 10 from 1 to 5 p.m.
The elementary school’s show will feature work done by students, faculty and artist-in-residence Dan Lewis during Mr. Lewis’ residency in April.
Ms. Howland is the county artist-in-residence in May, sponsored by RAAC. She will be working at the Rappahannock County High School with senior citizens and local artists.
Mr. Lewis’ residency was funded by the Virginia Commission of the Arts and Rappahannock County School Board. Ms. Howland’s stay is funded by the Mid-Atlantic States Arts Consortium and RAAC. The shows will be open each weekend through May 24.
Revival at Chester Gap
Chester Gap Baptist Church invites all to revival services Sunday, May 18, through Friday, May 23, at 7:30 each evening. The evangelist will be Dr. G. Reenactment of the Battle of
New Market scheduled
The 19th annual reenactment of the Battle of New Market will be staged by some 700 participants from 17 states Sunday, May 11, at 2 p.m., a New Market Battlefield Park spokesman said recently.
Reinstated this year will be a mock night artillery duel Saturday at 10 p.m. Twelve cannons will fire in this event as well as in the reenactment the next day.
The reenactment, the largest of its kind held annually on authentic terrain, commemorates the May 15, 1864, battle in which 247 cadets of Virginia Military Institute fought as a unit. Ten cadets were killed and 47 wounded.
Blue Ridge sheep dog trial
The Blue Ridge Open Sheep Dog Trial will be held on Sunday and Monday, May 25 and 26, at Sunnybrook Farm, White Post. Two novice classes will also be held on Saturday afternoon, May 24.
Because of her immense popularity and great knowledge of judging sheep dogs, Viv Billingham from Yetholm, Scotland, has been invited to judge the trial again this year. Mrs. Billingham’s husband, Geoff, also a shepherd and top trials handler and expert stickmaker (shepherd’s crook), will judge the Oatlands Sheep Dog Trial the following weekend near Leesburg.
