“These are the cases where shelters are invaluable,” she added. “The shelters provide transportation if she doesn’t have it, a safe place to stay, and counseling and advice.”
Turner said that Rappahannock can presently use the Culpeper shelter and somehow the shelter workers always find room. A shelter in Warren County will also accept Rappahannock women and children as space permits.
“I’ve been surprised to find out how many women either do not have families here or who feel they cannot go to them for help,” she said.
