Mrs. Schlageter’s prize-winning recipe is for a spinach salad which “I make all the time. . .everyone loves it.” She said that she entered the Tribune contest “on a whim.” It was the first recipe contest she entered, and she had forgotten all about it when she got a call from the newspaper. “The person told me I’d better sit down, and I thought it was bad news,” Mrs. Schlageter said, smiling as she recalled the moment. “I think the salad is different, and thought it might have a chance. . .but I was flabbergasted when they told me I’d won the grand prize.”
The Schlageters found the East Coast to be very different from the scenery they are accustomed to in the west. “From the plane, flying into Dulles, it looks like no one lives here. There is so much forest, and the houses are much further apart. In California it’s pretty much one big city from San Francisco to Sacramento. Here once you get outside the city of Washington, D. C., it immediately becomes rural." Mrs. Schlageter said they found Rappahannock to be “a charming area.” After spending the afternoon on the Skyline Drive Mr. Schlageter said “it reminds me of the foothills of the Sierras.”
After their dinner and overnight stay at The Inn the Schlageters planned to drive to Mount Vernon and possibly on to Annapolis. The rest of their weekend itinerary consisted of sight-seeing in Washington, D. C.
