ratncia Saltonstall, owner of Points of View Farm at Flint Hill and chairperson of the Spellman Memorial Scholarship committee, spoke of the significance of the scholarship: “Ranee grew up in Culpeper County and is buried in Rappahannock County, on that mountain top he lovingly landscaped and fanned. We who have created the memorial scholarship in his name hope that applicants from both counties will apply for the first annual $1,500 award.
“Next year, we hope there will be two awards, with more to follow as funds are raised. Eventually, there will be enough awards given annually to honor the variety of special skills essential to successful farming, skills Ranee had in such abundance.
“Nothing would give us greater satisfaction than to see those skills live on through deserving Rappahannock and Culpeper youth — and adults — who care seriously for the land, birds and animals as Ranee Spellman did.”
