If you were offered an all-expenses paid dinner for two and overnight accommodations at any restaurant and hotel in the continental United States, where would you choose to go? New York, or Chicago, or perhaps even Washington, D. C.? For Wendy Schlageter, of San Leandro, Calif., that mind-boggling hypothetical question became a reality recently. Mrs. Schlageter won the grand prize in a recipe contest sponsored by the Oakland (Calif.) Tribune.
For Mrs. Schlageter and her husband Steve, the decision was not an easy one. “We’ve never been to the East Coast, and we decided to visit Washington, D. C.” But for their dinner, the Schlageters bypassed all the restaurants in “big” Washington and chose The Inn at Little Washington. “We asked a lot of people for suggestions and everyone had different ideas,” Mrs. Schlageter said.
Their solution was to turn to the Food Editor of The Tribune for advice. She showed the Schlageters an article about The Inn which had recently appeared in The San Francisco Chronicle. “It sounded like a place we would love. We spent three months in England, and The Inn is very English, with just a touch of French.” The Inn lived up to their expectations. “It’s really a romantic place. Dinner was lovely. . .we didn’t want it to end.”
They have been married for 15 years, and this trip was a kind of second honeymoon, although Mr. Schlageter added that on their next trip
