Ten days later, on May 5, 1945, the four men were summoned to the Little Red Schoolhouse (Gen. Eisenhower’s headquarters in Reimes) to be congratulated personally by the general. They presented him with the makeshift flag which they had used to identify themselves, Gen. Eisenhower promoted each man one grade in rank in “one of the fastest promotions on record,” according to Stars and Stripes newspaper, saying that “my only regret is that I wasn’t there with you.”
