Rappahannock’s varsity baseball team outhit a tough .Stonewall team on Tuesday night but couldn’t outscore them in a 5-4 decision.
The Panthers banged out nine hits to Stonewall’s seven, one of them a home run to right-center field by senior centerfielder Rob Brown, who was 2 for 3 at the plate.
The Panthers scored one in the bottom of the first, after Brown singled, stole second and third and came home on an overthrow to third.
Stonewall countered with two in the top of the third after base hits put two on, an error added a third, and a sacrifice fly. Stonewall added a lone run in the fifth, then two more in the top of the sixth.
Brown’s lead off home run came in the sixth, but a Panther rally was crushed when a line drive to second turned into a Stonewall double play. In the bottom of the seventh, junior firstbaseman, Wayne Foster got to first on an error, freshman Wes Jenkins and senior Craig William singled, sophmore Greg Smith doubled, and Rob Brown drew a walk, putting the score at 5-4. (Rapp’s first out came during that rally when pinch runner Greg Daczewitz fell rounding third base and was put out).
With bases loaded and one out, senior Tommy Jenkins, who’d doubled earlier, struck out and senior H. B. Wood’s grounder to short was flipped to second for the final out.
