The Virginia State Defense Force, or organized State Militia, will assume duties such as aiding in civil disasters and other emergencies, should the Virginia Army National Guard be called to federal service outside of Virginia.
The militia's name was recently changed from Virginia State Guard to Virginia State Defense Force in order to clarify its identity apart from the Virginia National Guard.
