Joblessness hits 14 percent
Rappahannock's unemployment rate continued to rise in February, up sixthtenths of a percent from January to 14 percent, according to figures released by the Culpeper Office of the Virginia Employment Commission.
During February there were 497 persons out of work in a total labor pool of 3,544. That was an increase from January's 13.4 percent, and up almost 40 percent from December's 10.3 figure.
Last year, during February, the rate in Rappahannock was 12 percent.
Other area jurisdictions and their rates: Culpeper, 13.1 percent; Fauquier, 7 percent; Madison, 8.3 percent; and Orange, 10.6 percent
