I also ask, in all of the outcry over public funding of the arts, what is at the root of this rage that questions less than 20 grants out of 90,000 given in more than 25 years? Such an obviously overblown outcry points to the existence of some other issue underneath it all.
Why is the fist being drawn so hard around the less-than-a-dollar per taxpayer for the arts by those that would defund the NEA? Tax dollars continue to flow freely in ways that ignore poverty, homelessness and poor education, and subsidize the destruction of our land and environment. If all government agencies were to be closed because of controversy over spending decisions, no agency would be left standing.
What is it about the current controversy in the arts that it has stirred up so much outcry while many of the things going wrong and crumbling around us often inspire only a shake of the head? What are we afraid might be seen, heard or communicated in the form of artistic expression? Why have these few controversial grants been so challenging?
