Drunk drivers kill people. They have to be treated differently than other addicts for that reason but nonetheless they are victims of a hereditary illness just as are those who suffer from diabetes or sickle cell anemia.
I can choose 10 typical lives of children I have known over the past 30 years who have been victims of the weed or other non-alcoholic drugs. All of them were highly principled, attractive, generous and loved by all. They have lost anything from 10 year?' of maturing to loss of freedom, loss of life, loss of respect, loss of productivity and loss of love. They did not seek this misfortune, it just happened to them. Most lose a little time, and regret it, but some unfortunates are still losing and almost as if they have no other choice.
I started this article because I heard the joke about old Uncle Ed. I do not even know if there was an Uncle Ed or not.
I got carried away and upon review I am in a fix on how to end this column. Since I am not a court judge nor prosecutor I cannot criticize; circumstances and experience weigh their decisions. I have heard lawmen say: “They had their chance,” or: “They broke the law and I arrest them, I’m not into social work.” The message, I hope, is that there is no evil in most of these victims. There is still love, genius and generosity dormant inside, waiting to get out. They need help, even if it has to be forced upon them, and I wish everyone would care.
