Payne had eight strike-outs and faced only 24 batters in seven innings as the Lady Panthers had no errors on defense. The winning run came on a sacrifice fly by Lori Paratore that scored Marsha Freeman.
Luray was the pre-season favorite to win the Skyline District.
Coach Renee Leake said that the team is playing well, but games this week at home against Central on ’ Friday and at home against Strasburg on Monday will tell her more about how far the team can expect to go. The team also travels to Page County for a April 15 contest.
“We’re scoring a lot of runs, and I think that’s just heads-up base running,” she said, noting that only one Rappahannock runner has been thrown out stealing so far this season.
Offensive output, a problem last season, has been more than adequate. Coach Leake said last year a typical score might be 4-2; this season the Lady Panthers are scoring in double digits.
