M1 found [I Lead The Band] in a dispersal sale,” explained Kinross trainer, Pat Myer. “The sales staff knew the ‘type’ of horse I was looking for. TTiis guy fits the bill as a ’chaser-type.”
The 4-year-old Fit To Fight gelding won his first ’92 start, a tune-up on the flat March 15 at the Farmington races. Myer said that he is being primed for sanctioned competition later this season.
The other Kinross winner was first-time timber starter Rolls, also ridden by Cooney. “This is not only his first ’92 start, but also his first try ever over timber,” Myer said. Kinross’ Rolls, another New Zealand horse, won his division of the novice timber race.
“He was imported from New Zealand as a 5-year-old,” Myer offered. “He was a fairly prolific winner over hurdles down there. He ran over hurdles in the U.S. for a season but was injured, twice, in his tendons.
“I figured that he might make a timber horse some day, if we could only get him to relax,” Myer noted. “His best distance over hurdles was short—one and seven-eighths to two miles. If he relaxes, though, he can run farther.”
