To the Editor
As a relatively new resident of Rappahannock County and the recipient of several National Endowment for the Arts Choreographer’s Fellowships, I have followed the controversy that has ensued since Ron Frazier’s letter of March 5 with great interest.
I moved to Woodville a little over a year ago from D.C. I had become acquainted with the community through my work with Ki Theatre for several years' previous to my move. I was attracted to Rappahannock because of the possibility of living and working in a community that I feel values the arts and creative activity as an expression of the human spirit, the expression of such what I consider to be the ultimate freedom. I still very much feel this about the community.
I have not been so naive as to think that everyone in the area enjoys or partakes of the arts, or even considers them worthwhile. In addition, I know that not even they who do will necessarily find everything I do or create “good” or “wonderful,” but it is my hope that in the spirit of community which involves a commitment to the individuals that make it up, I can strive to do my work as honestly and fully as possible and that it will in turn be valued and respected by members of the community. My relationship to the community will take time to develop just as any relationship, and I look forward to its evolution.
