Same taxes

would require

50-cent rate

Under the new assessment one cent on the tax rate will raise about $61,400 in taxes. Under the current assessment one cent raised $33,400.

The tax rate has been 77 cents for the past two years. To raise the same amount of money under the current assessment would require a tax rate of 60 cents.

It is not likely the Board of Supervisors will be able to hold the tax rate at 50 cents. Most parts of the county budget will be increasing. The budget for schools calls for an increase of $260,000 in county funds, or 11 percent.

Under the new assessment 49 percent of the land value will be deferred through the land use assessment program. Under the current assessment 35 percent of the land value was deferred through land use.

Most of this change results from the fact that land use assessments increased only a little while “fair market value" assessments increased much more. Thus a higher percentage of the value of the land is lost when it is asssessed at land use value rather than at “fair market value. ”
