What I also hope, and I hope not naively, is that just as I desire to acknowledge the members of the community whose paths I may never or seldom cross because of our differences in tastes, interests or pursuits as a part of the fabric of the diverse culture of this community, that I may also be accepted in turn as a part of that fabric. I applaud that we can converse openly in the public forum of the Rappahannock News without fear of reprisal and with the vast differences that exist between our viewpoints. May this continue to be so. But for it to remain so, we must each be able to continue to express our viewpoints as different, conflicting or opposing as they may seem to be. This must continue to be so within all the groups that each individual may be a member of— whether that be a political party or a geographic community.
It is not a part of the democratic process that all members of any community totally agree on any issue. The common ground between us is that we can each make our own choices as to work, lifestyle, and values as long as it does not infringe on the ability of others to also have choice. Then we are left to figure out how to live peacefully side by side as a community, and as communities within communities. The alternative: no need to figure out how to live side by side with our differences because we have no choice to have differences. Is this the preference?
