Cooney edged Rolls away from Ten Bar to get home by five lengths.
The other division of the novice timber was taken by Paddy’s Run and trainer-rider Jeremy Gillam.
Cooney followed his timber victory up with one more of his own riding Spiid Blong Hem. “This was his first start ever—he never even ran on the flat at the race track,” said The Plains resident Cooney. Whitewood Stable and trainer Susan Cooney sent the homebred 4-year-old to win the lV2-mile flat contest handily by five lengths over Port Micou and Hilary Thompson.
“He really started to get into it in the end there,” Cooney stated. “At
O’Keefe agreed with her partner on the subject of speed, but told a different story abouther second ride. She also paired with Joyce Sims and Kentucky Lumberjack to compete the race.
“I had a fall at the second last jump,” laughed O’Keefe. “We still came in about 30 seconds too fast . . . my partner was teasing me that I should have been slower getting back in the saddle. Then we might have been right on the exact time.”
Second place was awarded to another Rappahannock team. Brian Fitzgerald on Native Ambition and Susan Poole on Spree finished in a time of 13:37.70. Just behind them in third was the Warrenton team of Caroline Davis and Rosemary Laimbeer. Their time was 13:37.51.
In the junior division, Rappahannock representatives Ashley Settle on The Black Imp and Inise Nelson on Too Good To Be True won in a time of 14:06. Year-end award leaders Chris Read and Jason Jones were too fast—13:17.91—and settled for second place this week.
The next hunter pace will be sponsored by the Loudoun Hunt. April 11 at 11 a.m.
