Two Fauquier horsemen each captured three victories at the April 4 Old Dominion Hunt Point-to-Point at Ben Venue. Jockey Patrick Cooney and owner Kinross Farm collaborated on two of the three victories, with jockey Gus Brown and owner Whitewood Stable adding to the combined totals.
The featured open hurdje race $aw Oakbum (NZ) carry the colors of Zohar BenDay's Kinross Farm with distinction over the two miles. Kinross’ Mihmaz won the same ’chase in 1991. Oakbum is now riding the crest of a two-race win streak. He captured the open hurdle contest at Piedmont on March 21.
“He rated well, and we were able to stay off the quick early pace,” explained winning rider Brown. “He jumped superbly... at the third last, I saw a really long spot [to take off for the jump] and thought that I would ask him for it. Well, he took off a full stride earlier than that. He is capable of such brilliant jumping."
The 9-year-old relaxed mid-field for the first two of three turns of the course. Brown allowed early leader Blue Arab to string the field along for 1V4 miles before making his move.
Entering the backstretch for the final time, Brown stole multiple lengths in the air and moved to the lead. He quickened a quarter-mile from home and extended his compand to three lengths at the wire.
