State police say alcohol and excessive speed caused a single-vehicle accident in Chester Gap early Saturday morning that killed one man and put three others in the hospital. It was the county’s first traffic fatality since July 1989.
The driver, Rocky Lane Morris, 24, of Chester Gap, was operating a 1965 Buick westbound on Route 610, seven-tenths of a mile west of Route 670, when he entered a curve going about 50 miles per hour, said Sgt. G.A. Morris of the State Police. The posted speed is 25 mph, and the safe speed around that curve is even slower, said the sergeant.
The Buick ran off the right side of the road and hit a tree. Morris was trapped in the wreckage and died on the scene.
Three passengers sustained serious injuries: 22-year-old Gregory Hickerson, a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy.

The car was destroyed in the wreck.
In other police and court news this week:
• A Delaplane woman was charged with causing a three-car accident on U.S. 522 at the Route 635 intersection at 2:40 p.m. April 3, according to Sgt. Morris.
Viola Gasldns, 73, of Delaplane, was operating a 1986 Pontiac southbound on U.S. 522 when she made a left turn into the path of a northbound 1981 Ford, operated by Edward McKay, 19, of Winchester. The Pontiac pushed the Ford into a stopped 1990 Ford truck, operated by 57-year-old Raymond Loughry of Front Royal, who was waiting to turn onto U.S. 522 from Route 635, said Sgt. Morris.
The Pontiac was destroyed, the 1981 Ford sustained $2,000 in damages and the Ford truck escaped with minor damages.
Ms. Gaskins and a 93-year-old passenger, Emily Poles, were injured in the collision. Ms. Gaskins was charged with improper turning.
• Fire did about $20,000 in damage to the original post office building in Flint Hill at the U.S. 522Route 641 intersection Monday night, according to Flint Hill Assistant Fire Chief Frankie Huff.
