ist Hope Porter, of Warrenton, said, “We believe that most of Mr. Wood’s constituents are as concerned about the negative aspects of S.B. 514 as they are about S.B. 270—the fiveyear vesting bill, which Mr. Wood correctly opposed."
“S.B. 514 was written expressly for Lee Sammis, the California land speculator who bought thousands of acres in Culpeper County at the site of the Battle of Brandy Station, with plans to build there a new city as big as downtown Richmond,” said Mrs. Porter, a member of the Piedmont Environmental Council and Citizens for Fauquier County.
“S.B. 514 was designed to reverse the Department of Historic ' Resources’ finding that the area is historically significant,” she said. “The fundamental question here is to what extent will Virginia be able to continue to protect its historic resources in the face of pressures from land speculators and developers.”
