Shea was a sort of stew that was made from cabbage and sausage and some other things that probably have no English name. It was good, and I preferred it because all their other food was very heavy and these soups were an exception. Overall, the food was good and I never got sick.
As the weeks passed by, I realized that most of my preconceptions and stereotypes that are widely accepted in American minds were wrong. I think that lots of people have been misled by the media to believe that all the Russians are starving, homeless and in a terribly poor situation. The women weren’t all 70year-old bag ladies. In fact, the appearance of the people is very similar to the faces I see at home.
I saw very few overweight individuals and no one who was starving. The streets at night are not a picture-perfect place for a foreigner, but not many people are stupid enough to pick those dark alleys at three in the morning.
I saw fewer homeless or starving individuals on the street than we see in our own capital. Instead, there were people frequently playing instruments for tips or selling magazines for high prices (by Russian standards).
