“It’s not that the hospital was inadequate in the past,” said Rodger Baker, Fauquier Hospital’s President. “It was built in the 1950’s when the challenges of providing health care were very diffemet. It’s grown and adapted several times in past decades to better serve the community, and it’s changing again now.”
The original hospital, constructed in 1958, had sixty-three beds and served an almost entirely rural population. Three previous expansion projects between 1969 and 1985 brought the facility up to its current 121 bed capacity.
The current construction project was partially funded through the hospital’s “Caring for the Future” Capital Campaign, a fund raising effort which raised netdy 3.6 million dollars in pledges from hospital employees, physicians and the general public. The remainder of the construction costs were financed through the sale of tax-exempt bonds to investors through the Industrial Development Authority of Fauquier County.
The $12.9 million project is nearing compeltion, with the wrap-up of the final phases slated for next spring. Several finished phases of construction have allowed the opening of a new and re-equipped Emergency Department and Laboratory.
The most visible sign of progress at Fauquer Hospital is its new lobby and drive-in/drop-off area, currently under heavy construction. Most of it should be completed by November. The new lobby has three times the space of the previous lobby, and additional private space for patient admissions. A new canopy will shelter vehicles discharging and picking up patients and visitors in inclement weather.
