She said she had.consulted with representatives from the Virginia Education Association. The VEA has no position on smoking, she said. She added that she had found that “bans on smoking can be the most divisive issue in a school system, and that divisiveneBS can affect everyone.”
She suggested that a committee be formed to look into all the problems such a policy might cause before it is adopted and that smokers be included on the committee.
Dr. Gangel said he would see that such a committee is formed and he would negotiate with firms interested in selling health insurance to school system employees to see if they would help with a program to help smokers quit.
The board heard a report by the team working on Project CASPER (Computers and Students in Partnership for Educational Rewards) ftmded by the RJR/Nabisco Co.
Project director Kirk Halgren said there were three goals for the project: improving student performance, totally integrating computers in the curriculum, and using continuous improvement techniques in developing and implementing the project.
The board saw demonstrations of the project prepared by the other team members, Lynn Beahm and Layne Vickers, for teaching addition and science. The demonstrations combined pictures, even animated ones, and sound.
Students will be able to work at their own pace, and can review material until it is learned. Those who learn quickly will be able to move on to extra material.
