Women of Caucasian and Asian descent, those with a family history of fractures, those who have had an early menopause, and those with a small-boned, slim build are at greatest risk for osteoporosis. Those who are inactive and whose diets lack calcium are also at increased risk for the disease. Cigarette smoking and excessive alcohol consumption add to the risk for developing osteoporosis.
“People who suffer from osteoporsis often become prisoners of their own bodiers, unable to perform simple activities like house cleaning and grocery shopping,” says Sandrfk C. Raymond, NOF’s executive director. “Often, they live in fear of suffering a debilitating fracture that may rob them of their independence and ability to perform routine activities.”
