“He tends to lose things and gets easily frustrated by ipinor problems,” Mrs. Chandler said. “For example, David will be totally beside himself when a ribbon breaks on his word processor if he’s in the middle of a project he needs for the next day.”
Like one-quarter of the Rhode Island students Dr. Carskadon studied, David occasionally falls asleep during classes and often finds it hard to concentrate.
“I’ve talked to a lot of teachers who say that lack of sleep is impairing students’ learning and school performance,” she said. “They are frustrated by trying to teach kids who are so sleepy they can’t respond. It makes their job extremely difficult, if not impossible.”
Even more serious, sleep-deprivation potentiates the sedative effects of alcohol, reducing an adolescent's safety margin for normal experimentation.
“A fully alert teenager might be able to cope adequately with a beer or two, whereas an already sleepy youngster is likely to be severely impaired due to the interaction of sleepiness and alcohol,” says Dr. Carskadon, pointing out that this greatly escalates the risk of driving.
