The newly identified terms may be defined with what will replace the U.S. Recommened Daily Allowance as reference values. The two sets of values will be known as Reference Daily Intakes (RDI) and Daily Reference Values (DRV).
The RDI will provide an average nutrient intake for the population, rather than the highest value of the nutrients per age and gender. The RDI values may be used to compare the protein, vitamin and mineral content of foods.
The DRV’s will be used to compare fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, carbohydrates, fiber, sodium and potassium. Since there wre no previously identified average allowance, these were established jointly by many health organizations and the Surgeon General.
