Regular exercise is a major contributor to good health. Sensible moderate exercise not only slows down some of the deleterious effects of aging, it may add years to your life. According to a study funded by the Life Extension Foundation, “Seniors who exercised consistently for an average of 17 years measured 11.2 years younger in physical tests. ”

Exercise, when done at least three times a week, does several things; it helps control weight, keeps bones strong, builds muscle and conditions the heart and lungs. It also relieves stress. Exercise can enhance your mental sharpness, self-esteem and improve the quality of your sleep.

Walking, according to exercise specialists, is one of the best all-around exercises. Hospitals and community centers nationwide now have exercise programs geared strictly to those over 65. Fauquier Hospital offers two such classes. These classes are designed to enhance both flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. Swimming Seniors, a water aerobics class held at the Comfort Inn during the summer months, offers exercises that provide both flexibility and cardiovascular benefits. During the rest of the year, Swinging Seniors, an indoor aerobic exercise class is offered.
