As in years past, the Alive and Kicking activities culminate in a five kilometer run/walk. It will be held Saturday, Oct. 3 at Airlie Conference Grounds. The three mile course is not intended to be solely a race. Its goal is to encourage runners, walkers and families to exercise together.
Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each age group and ribbons will be presented to all participants.
“If we can get people more aware of their own health risks and what they can do about them, we’re half the way there,” said Ayers. “The other half is getting them to incorporate these changes into a lifestyle they can live with.”
The goal may be lofty, but the organizers of Alive and Kicking believe that it is possible. The program has reached many county residents in past years, and Susan Ayers and her volunteer force hope to achieve the same enthusiasm this year.
Good health is a lifestyle decision, according to Ayers, It take some effort.
“Instead of getting weighed down with everything that’s supposed to be better for us, we should work on things one at a time,” she said. “If one person gives up smoking or learns about good nutrition during the week, it will have been worth it.”
