To the Editor:
Thanks for editorial (Aug. 27) on tourism. Rappahannock is indeed the ideal destination for city fojk. Some of our guests have come from Gainesville and Warrenton just getting away to the country.
As a Virginia destination, the Shenandoah National Park with its Skyline Drive overlooks and trails to mountains and waterfalls, is second only to Colonial Williamsburg. The highest rated restaurant in North America plus three more affordable options make us a mecca for superb dining.
Endless recreation amidst unspoiled scenery also attracts visitors who make no demand on our tax-supported public services. An average couple overnighting at a bed and breakfast leaves another $75 in our local economy.
You seemed to suggest that our local government should start promoting tourism. Yes, some token acknowledgement and support of the regional Foothills Travel Association would be nice. But there is something far more important to do for our hospitality industry and that is to preserve the natural scenic beauty that brings tourists here in the first place.
If we allow Rappahannock to grow into another bedroom jungle, forget tourism. Let’s get a handle on hilltop development and farmland loss before the reason for coming to our county is gone.
